Busy classrooms, noisy birthday parties, scratchy labels, flickering lights: for many children, especially autistic and otherwise neurodivergent children, the everyday sensory world can be genuinely overwhelming. Sensory overload happens when the brain receives more sensory information than it can process, and it sits behind a huge amount of distress that gets mislabelled as bad behaviour.
What is sensory overload?
We often talk about five senses, but the brain is actually processing at least eight streams of sensory information, including balance (the vestibular sense), body position (proprioception) and internal signals like hunger and heartbeat (interoception). Children with sensory processing differences may experience some of these channels far more intensely than others do, or far less. When too much comes in at once, the nervous system floods, and the result is sensory overload.
Signs of sensory overload in children
Sensory overload looks different in every child, but common signs include:
- Covering ears or eyes, or trying to leave or hide
- Sudden distress, anger or tears that seem to come from nowhere
- Increased stimming, such as rocking, flapping or humming
- Complaints of headaches or tummy aches in busy places
- Going quiet, still or unresponsive (a shutdown)
- Refusing places, clothes or foods that involve difficult sensations
Common sensory triggers
- Sound: hand dryers, assemblies, sudden alarms, several people talking at once
- Light: fluorescent strip lighting, flickering screens, bright sunlight
- Touch: clothing seams and labels, unexpected physical contact, messy play textures
- Smell and taste: strong food smells, perfumes, cleaning products
- Movement and crowds: busy corridors, supermarkets, soft play centres
- Internal states: hunger, thirst and tiredness all shrink a child's capacity to cope
Hypersensitive, hyposensitive, or both
Some children are hypersensitive and experience sensations as too loud, too bright or too much. Others are hyposensitive and seek extra input: crashing, spinning, chewing, touching everything. Many children are a mixture, seeking some sensations while avoiding others. Neither is wrong. Both are information about what that child's nervous system needs.
Calming strategies in the moment
- Move to a quieter, dimmer space, or create one with ear defenders or a hood
- Reduce your own output: fewer words, lower voice, slower movements
- Offer deep pressure if your child finds it comforting, such as a firm hug, a weighted blanket or a squeeze of the shoulders
- Offer a familiar regulating item, like a chewy, fidget or comfort object
- Give it time. Nervous systems calm on their own schedule, not ours
Preventing sensory overload
Prevention beats rescue. Many families build a simple sensory diet: regular, planned sensory input across the day, such as movement breaks, heavy work like carrying or pushing, and quiet time, so the child's system stays regulated rather than lurching between extremes. Planning ahead helps too: visiting venues at quiet times, preparing children for what a place will sound and feel like, and packing a small sensory kit.
Sensory overload at school
School environments are sensory-intense by design. If your child regularly comes home dysregulated, it is worth a conversation with the class teacher or SENCO about adjustments such as movement breaks, a quiet space, seating away from doors and windows, or permission to leave assemblies. Small environmental changes often transform a child's day.
